WEBINAR: Low Back Pain – Latest Evidence and Sharing the Burden through Team-Based Care

This webinar will discuss the management of patients who present with low back pain. This session will be presented by GP academic Professor Simon Willcock, along with Profs Simon French and Mark Hancock from Macquarie University. This webinar will cover the latest evidence related to low back pain and how this can be applied in general practice to optimise patient outcomes.  The presentation will use the recently released Australian Clinical Standard for low back pain, and the WHO guideline for the management of chronic LBP as guides for applying high quality care.

The session will include:
– Brief summary of the most important and recent evidence about low back pain
– Practical guidance on applying this evidence and the new Australian Clinical Care Standards in general practice
– Discussion about a research opportunity looking at a new model of team-based care to manage patients with low back pain in a primary care setting.

SPEAKERS:

Professor Simon Willcock – Clinical Director of Primary Care and Wellbeing, MQ Health

Prof. Willcock is a General Practitioner and Clinical Program Head of Primary and Generalist Care, Wellbeing and Diagnostics at MQ Health. His education and research interests include the health of doctors, generational change in the medical workforce, men’s health and musculoskeletal medicine. Simon trained as a rural procedural GP and practised in Inverell, NSW. He has had a number of educational and clinical leadership roles and is currently a board member of the Sydney North Health Network and Estia Health.

Professor Mark Hancock – BAppSc (Phty), MAppSc (research), PhD, is Professor of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, Macquarie University.

Prof. Hancock is one of the world’s leading back pain researchers (e.g. ranked 3rd internationally according to Expertscape on 1/1/23). Mark has 20 years of clinical experience as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist working in primary care, but now works full-time as an academic/researcher. Prof. Hancock’s research focuses on the development and testing of effective treatments and prevention strategies for low back pain. He has over >200 peer reviews publication on low back pain assessment and management.

Professor Simon French – Professor of Musculoskeletal Disorders at the Department of Chiropractic, Macquarie University, where he is Director of Research.

Prof. French undertakes implementation research in primary care with a focus on the management of musculoskeletal conditions. Simon is an implementation scientist and clinical researcher in the area of low back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. He has completed 13 randomised trials published in major journals, e.g. Annals Int Med, Implementation Science, Pain, and completed 16 systematic reviews. He is a Chief Investigator on 2 current NHMRC-funded trials.

GPs, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Managers, Allied Health Professionals and other Primary care providers

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

– Distinguish the latest evidence regarding assessment and treatment of low back pain
– Implement recommendations from the Australian Clinical Care Standard for the management of patients with Low Back Pain, to patients presenting to general practice
– Describe how a team-based approach to care can assist GPs in applying clinical standards into practice and optimise patient outcomes.

COST:
There is no cost for Practices and their staff within the SNHN region to attend this training
