Face to Face: The First 2000 Days – Conception to age five

Presented by Dr Elisabeth Murphy, The First 2000 Days Framework outlines the importance of the first 2000 days of a child’s life (from conception to age 5) and what actions need to be taken to ensure that all children have the best possible start in life. The framework provides for lifetime physical, social and emotional health outcomes and what parents and professionals can do to support a child’s development.

  • Learn the Signs, Act Early. Don’t wait and see – act early!
  • The Blue Book how this can be used by practices/GPs/Practice Nurses
  • What can the NSLHD Child and Family Health Services to do help you and your patients?
  • Detailed local referral options and contacts

This workshop is the first in a series that will explore the First 2000 Days in more detail throughout 2024.

We will also discuss the upcoming Community of Practice interactive webinars commencing 15 May

SPEAKERS:

A/Professor Elisabeth Murphy | Senior Clinical Advisor, Child and Family Health, NSW Ministry of Health

Associate Professor Elisabeth Murphy  has overseen the implementation of a number of early intervention programs including NSW-wide screening programs for hearing (SWISH – Statewide Infant Screening – Hearing) and vision (StEPS); the Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Strategy and the promotion of health checks for improved child development and health in the NSW Personal Health Record. Dr Murphy is also the Network Director for Child Youth and Family Health in NSLHD. She is a past recipient of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Medal and has recently been recognised as one of the top 50 Public Sector Women – NSW.

Dr Maria Liddy, GP

Maria has a wide range of post graduate diplomas in child health, women’s health, care of the elderly and dermatology. She enjoys all areas of general practice and has a special interest in child health including child immunisations, women’s health and care of the elderly. When she isn’t working she is busy cycling, gardening and running after her five young children!

Dr Anastasia Scott | Speech Therapist

Speech Pathology Lead – Child, Youth and Family Community Health Services Primary and Community Health

Kerry McBride | Primary Care Nurse Coordinator, Sydney North Health Network

Kerry McBride is a local Practice Nurse and the SNHN Nurse Co-Ordinator and runs the Northern Sydney Nurses Network. Kerry is also a Nurse mentor for primary health Nurses in our region. Kerry has an extensive background in Child Health and Development and Policy Creation and implementation. Having created and run Sydney’s first Nurse-led baby clinic in the practice she worked in, she is a strong advocate for patient care both within the practice and in the community. Kerry brings a “whole practice change” approach to care.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

General Practitioners, Primary Care Nurses, Practice Staff and Allied Health Professionals working in the Sydney North Health Network region.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Analyse the Significance of the First 2000 Days in a child’s life.
  • Emphasise the importance of early action – Don’t wait and see – Act Early!
  • Increase understanding of developmental red flags and the importance of early assessment and treatment
  • Implement referrals using local services for assessment and treatment
COST:
There is no cost for Practices and their staff within the SNHN region to attend this training
