Face to Face: National Asthma Council Australia (NAC) Spirometry Training Course

Brought to you by Sydney North Health Network and the National Asthma Council Australia as part of the Asthma Best Practice for Health Professionals Program

The Spirometry Training Course provides comprehensive training in the application, measurement and interpretation of expiratory spirometry in general practice. The six-hour interactive workshop includes a practical, hands-on component to allow participants to apply their new knowledge in a practical setting.

This complimentary course is open to GPs and practice nurses and is worth 40 GP CPD points .

There are limited places available for this workshop so register early.

SPEAKERS:

Dr Margaret McElrea, Amy Bertolin and Mahesh Dharmakumara speaking for the National Asthma Council

Dr McElrea has over 30 years’ experience in clinical lung function testing and clinical research in Australia and Canada. She also spent nine years of teaching spirometry to primary care nurses, general practitioners and Indigenous health workers.

Amy Bertolin is a Respiratory Scientist at Macquarie University Hospital

Mahesh Dharmakumara is a senior Respiratory Scientist at the Lung Function Laboratory, Alfred Hospital (VIC). He has over 15 years experience with lung function testing and has lectured in numerous Spirometry training and education courses. Mahesh also has a keen interest in Asthma research and is currently investigating novel measures of airway function using exhaled nitric oxide and airway oscillometry.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

General Practitioners and Practice Nurses

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Identify the clinical indications where spirometry is recommended
  • Demonstrate the ability to correctly perform a spirometry test, using role play and peer review
  • Interpret spirometry results to differentiate between respiratory conditions, such as asthma and COPD
  • Assess your own practice quality assurance procedures for spirometry
COST:
There is no cost to registered participants for this training

ACCREDITATION INFORMATION: 

  • Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP): Allocated 40 Category 1 points in the QI&CPD Program for the 2020-2022 triennium.
  • Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM): Accredited by ACRRM as an educational event for 30 PRDP points.
  • Completion of this educational activity entitles eligible participants to claim up to 6 CPD hours
