Face to Face: Health Coaching and Behaviour Change

Sydney North Health Network (SNHN) invites General Practitioners, Practice Nurses and Allied Health Professionals to a workshop on Health Coaching and Behaviour Change.

An effective partnership recognises the expertise that patients bring to the medical encounter, as well as the evidence base and medical judgment of the clinician and team. For clients or patients with chronic conditions, health coaching provides an effective framework for self-management support.

Introduction
• Group expectations and overview for this training

Establishing the Client-Centred Relationship
• Key components of a client-centred relationship and promoting ownership over health goals
• Promoting self-responsibility for health
• Challenging common assumptions

Communication Skills for Effective Conversations
• Effective questions that evoke insight and change talk
• The use of affirming language to encourage, strengthen self-efficacy, autonomy, and confidence
• Reflections and summaries to communicate understanding, drive momentum and motivation
• When and how to provide advice and information in a client centred way
• How to integrate a coaching approach with expertise

Harnessing motivation in ‘unmotivated’ clients
• Stages of change, factors influencing readiness and ambivalence
• Understanding motivation and strategies to increase importance of change
• Fostering positivity and evoking !change #or !action #talk
• Strategies for the ‘unmotivated’ client (pre-contemplative/contemplative)

Supporting clients to overcome barriers and become ‘unstuck’
• Addressing sustain talk (client’s reasons for not changing their behaviours)
• Strategies for increasing self-efficacy (confidence in their abilities)
• Identifying supports, preferences and lifestyle factors that are barriers and facilitators
• How to evoke client’s own solutions for change to overcome barriers and take action

Goal Setting and Action Plans
• Client centred approach to setting goals – supporting clients to identify priority areas that are impacting their health and life
• Tailoring goals to stage of change
• Role of action plans – all the steps that need to be considered
• How to collaboratively set action plans that anticipate future challenges and include possible solutions.

Demonstrations and Activities
• Communication skill demonstrations by presenters
• Group discussion and feedback
• Pre-workshop video on communication, communication roadblocks, key communication strategies for tricky clients, and myths of behaviour change.
• Discuss case studies through the lens of the health coaching framework

SPEAKERS:

Shivaun Conn, Director and Trainer, Accredited Health Coaching Australia
Shivaun has worked for over 16 years as an accredited practising dietitian, accredited nutritionist, health coach and presenter. She coaches individuals in nutrition and lifestyle, trains practitioners in health behaviour change, and delivers health coaching programs across a range of sectors.

Sharon Curtain, Director and Trainer, Accredited Health Coaching Australia
Sharon is a dietitian and health coach with 20 years’ experience in clinical and corporate nutrition. She is passionate about education and communication, with a focus on finding practical solutions to the challenges and barriers to achieving a healthy lifestyle.

Together, Shivaun and Sharon bring extensive knowledge and experience to this workshop, incorporating evidence-based health behaviour change interventions and techniques.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Explain the evidence for health coaching approach in primary care
  • Define the key components for establishing a person-centred relationship
  • Describe the stages of and drivers for health behaviour change
  • Identify strategies for assessing patient readiness and inherent motivation for change
