WEBINAR – Managing Alcohol Withdrawal in Primary Care

SPEAKERS:

Melise Ammit is a DANA Credentialled Drug & Alcohol Nurse working within the Northern Sydney Local Health District D&A service in both inpatient consultation liaison and outpatient nurse-led alcohol clinics at Brookvale and Royal North Shore Hospital.  In addition to her clinical role, Melise is a casual academic at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) where she is also a PhD candidate. Her research focuses on exploring factors that facilitate treatment access for women with alcohol use disorders with the aim to bridge gaps between research and actual clinical realities for women with AUD.

Dr Esther Han, General Practitioner and Drug & Alcohol specialist.  Esther is a GP on the northern beaches of Sydney, a Drug & Alcohol Specialist at Royal North Shore Hospital and a Clinical Lecturer in the Discipline of Addiction Medicine, Northern clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health University of Sydney.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

General Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners & Practice Nurses

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Assess and manage candidates for home detoxification: understand how to access the suitability of individuals for home detoxification, monitoring withdrawal symptoms, and implementing appropriate management strategies.
  • Explain the role of thiamine and harm reduction policies in alcohol withdrawal management. Recognise the critical role of thiamine in preventing Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome and the importance of harm reduction policies in supporting patient engagement.
  • Conduct Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBRIT) for AOD use: use evidence-based tools and techniques to identify indivdiuals at risk and facilitate appropriate interventions and referrals.
COST:
There is no cost for Practices and their staff within the SNHN region to attend this training
