Changes to the adult pneumococcal vaccination schedule under the National Immunisation Program from 1 July 2026

From 1 July 2026 there will be changes to the adult pneumococcal vaccination schedule under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). Key changes:

  • 21-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (21vPCV), Capvaxive®, will be introduced on the NIP and the adult immunisation schedule updated.

  • Capvaxive® will replace Prevenar 13® and Pneumovax 23® on the NIP for adults.

Capvaxive® is recommended and free through the NIP (from 1 July 2026) for:

  • all people aged 65 years and over – single dose

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander 25 years and over – single dose

  • People aged 18 years and over with an eligible medical condition* – single dose at diagnosis

Further information/resources will be available just prior to the program change on 1 July 2026.

In preparation, providers should:

  • limit orders of Prevenar 13 and only keep enough stock for use until the end of June
  • register for the NCIRS webinar on 24 June for a practical update on pneumococcal disease in adults and what forthcoming program changes will mean for immunisation providers
  • email pcait@snhn.org.au if you would like a printed copy of the new NSW Schedule – include size (A3 or A4) and quantity.
