This is a friendly reminder that Manly Drug Education and Counselling Centre (MDECC) is currently running a SMART Recovery Group for young adults between the ages of 18 to 25.
The group is run by trained facilitators at the MDECC premises. The group is an open group, running every Tuesday from 4:30-530pm. It is free of charge and the participants can turn up on the day without having to sign up before-hand. Participants can be from any area of Sydney.
The purpose of the group is to provide a safe and supportive environment for young adults to address any problematic behaviours they are experiencing, in particular drug and alcohol issues. The group assists clients to work towards their own goals, which can focus on reduction of problematic substance use rather than abstinence. Clients do not need to identify as “dependent” on a substance, or as an “alcoholic” or “drug addict” to attend the group and do not need to abstain from using substances, although we do ask that clients refrain from presenting to the group intoxicated.
The group works on a 4-point program, aimed at assisting participants with:
Point 1: Enhancing and maintaining motivation
Point 2: Coping with urges
Point 3: Problem solving
Point 4: Lifestyle balance
Attendance Sheets for Mandated Clients can be stamped after each attended session.
There is also an opportunity for participants to sign up for a Work Development Order (WDO) after they have attended 4 sessions.
