Inaugural Betty Johnson Award Winner Mary Potter
The Inaugural Betty Johnson Award was held in partnership with Sydney North Health Network, Northern Sydney Local Health District, and Consumer Health NSW.
The Award was presented at the Northern Sydney Local Health District Consumer Forum which was held on the 29th August 2017. This forum attracted over 70 local consumer advocates.
The award winner was Mary Potter who is an outstanding health consumer representative in the Northern Sydney Region. Mary is a member of our Community Council.
Mary worked for a general practice organisation where she was responsible for sourcing consumers for a range of different working groups. Her knowledge of the value of consumer input, coupled with her personal experience of being a cancer patient, got her thinking about how her expertise might be applied in a different way.
After she retired and once her health got better, Mary decided to sit on the other side of the desk and started getting involved as a consumer, which is where she has made so much positive change by ensuring Consumers are involved in Health decision making.
Mary is involved as a health consumer advisor with many health services in Northern Sydney including:
- Consumer Representative at Local State and National Levels
- Member Community Participation Committee Hornsby Hospital
- Hornsby Hospital Infection Prevention and Control Committee
How Mary utilises this award will be up to her, however she may consider attending, an interstate consumer conference or forum, or possibly further consumer training.
