Bushwalk, Hornsby Diatreme Geology

Bushwalk, Hornsby Diatreme Geology 21 AugustAug 2022 09:00am - 12:30pm

This 5 km walk follows the popular Blue Gum track, with a focus on the Hornsby diatreme, one of three overlapping basalt breccia pipes that cut through bedrock in the early Jurassic. Originally several hundred metres above today’s landscape, erosion removed the overlying rock and cut through the softer breccias to form a wide, deep valley. Rich soils now support a majestic blue gum forest with rainforest understory, in marked contrast to the nearby sandstone ridgetop woodland.

Grade: 4 (challenging) - contains long sections of trail that are hilly, steep or rough. It has a tricky creek crossing if water levels are up and leeches may be encountered after recent rain. More information about walk grades

Suitability: It is suitable for those with a moderate level of fitness and experience who are over 16 years of age.

Nearest train station: Hornsby train station is a 1.3 km walk from the meeting point.
