Information for NSW clinicians:
- Two cases of gonorrhoea highly resistant to antibiotics detected in Australia
- Take swabs for culture and antimicrobial resistance testing
- Treat gonorrhoea with ceftriaxone 500 mg IM plus azithromycin 1 g orally
- Perform a NAAT test of cure 2 weeks after treatment
Background:
Two cases of multi-drug resistant gonorrhoea have been recently detected in Australia. One case was diagnosed in Western Australia and a second case diagnosed in Queensland.
