Australia’s first National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) was launched on July 1 this year, prompting GPs to ask for a deeper educational dive into the management of lung nodules if these are detected during screening. How should GPs work with supporting radiologists and understand nodule types, and what are the next steps for GPs to do, including monitoring low-risk nodules and/or recommended pathways of care? Importantly, how should GPs discuss the presence of nodules with their patients and support them through the results and management protocols, including encouraging smoking cessation?
By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- Outline the role of the GP in managing nodules present in radiology reports of those participating in NLCSP, as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Discuss results of a NCLSP radiology report with patients, including a patient’s risk profile and appropriate follow-up
- List key features of an effective referral for management of nodules in high and very high-risk category identified through NCLSP participation
- Implement practice systems and processes for monitoring patients with low-risk nodules
