Expression of Interest: Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention Project

To support busy GPs in the care of patients who misuse alcohol, we are currently recruiting GP practices to participate in a short-term screening and brief intervention project. All resources are provided, and participants will receive clinical support from a GP and administrative support from the PHN throughout the project. There will be financial remuneration for participation.

Benefits
  • Access to relevant and effective resources
  • Increased knowledge of brief interventions
  • Fast, simple approach that fits into daily practice operations
  • Healthier patients
  • Networking and support from other clinicians
  • If completed by a practice nurse, it may release time for GPs

Method

First Consultation:
  • Over a 2-week period, GP/ Practice nurse will screen all patients over 18 and provide very brief interventions to patients who score above 5 on the AUDIT C alcohol screen.
  • Advice and resources some of which include:
    • Current guidelines for safe drinking
    • Discussion concerning the harms of substance use (binge drinking, weight gain, sleep, mood, blood pressure)
    • Providing patients verbal advice, fact sheets and information about local services.
    • Flyer leaflets
    • Information about local services
Second Consultation:

Following the first consultation, GPs/ practice nurses will be required to follow up with the patient regarding the intervention using a simple form. Data and results will be collated by the PHN to establish:

  • The efficacy of the brief interventions
  • Whether this approach is appropriate for GP practices and can be rolled out on a larger scale
  • GP/Practice nurse experience of project
