The Emergency Medicine Research Short Course

DATES: The course commences Monday 24 July 2017. The subjects incorporates both online learning and four face-to-face compulsory block days.

SYNOPSIS: 

This course is equivalent to two postgraduate units. It provides students with a thorough understanding of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) and Research Methods (RM) in the emergency medicine setting. EBM aims to equip students with the necessary skills to identify and incorporate the best available research evidence to their clinical training and clinical practice. RM enables students to acquire the necessary practical skills to design and conduct a research project.

COURSE CONTENT

Research Methods

  • Introduction to research methods used in observational studies
  • Practical skills required in the design and assessment of a research project
  • Protocol design, including study type selection, introduction to questionnaire design, sampling methods, and ethics approval
  • Planning data management and statistical analysis and developing a study budget
  • Introduction to the role of qualitative research

Evidence Based Medicine

  • Appropriately formulate answerable clinical questions
  • Scientific literature search
  • Critical appraisal of scientific literature and evidence based guidelines
  • Application of research to clinical practice
  • Barriers to changing practice

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Advanced trainees in Emergency Medicine
  • Clinicians with an interest in Emergency Medicine Research
  • Successful completion satisfies regulation 4.10 requirements of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM)
