Urgent Care Conference 2018

Sydney North Primary Health Network (SNPHN) invites local GPs, Primary Care Nurses, Pharmacists and Allied Health Professionals to participate in the Urgent Care conference. Concurrent streams will provide the latest in local and national information around the management of urgent medical care.

Four different education streams will run concurrently over the day.

Stream 1: Management of Medical Emergencies ALM

This stream will run for the entire day and is capped at a maximum of 30 participants.

Streams 2-4:

These streams are separated into three separate sessions at 8.30 am, 11.00am and 1.45pm. As part of registration you will need to select which sessions you would like to attend. Program and session details are on the following page.


8.15am – Registration and light snack
8:30am – 3.45pm – ALM and Seminars
Morning tea and lunch will be provided

Stream 1

Management of Medical Emergencies in General Practice ALM

  • Identify the most common medical emergencies afflicting patients using a risk management approach
  • Manage the immediate care of medical emergencies utilising a practice management (crew resource management) system
  • Apply techniques and protocols consistent with current emergency medical guidelines for pre-hospital care
  • Refer the patient to further appropriate care


Stream 2

Essential ECG Reading

  • Correctly identify normal aspects of ECG and deviations
  • Identify 13 arrhythmias in practice
  • Identify STEMI and Non STEMI
  • Understand 12 lead placement and aspect view

Eye and Dental Emergency

Diabetes and preventing an ED presentation

Hyperglycaemia and Diabetes Therapies


Stream 3

Linking Pathways from General Practice to Emergency Care

  • Explain the role of referral pathways in continuity of patient care
  • Describe the role and referral pathway for the Acute Post Acute Care (APAC) program
  • Review and understand the Secure Messaging Piolot and its potential role in improving patient outcomes and communication to General Practice
  • Describe the role and referral pathway for the Mobile X-ray service
  • Explain the role of Extended Care Paramedics

Palliative Care (Hammond)

Codeine Rescheduling and treatment options for management of opioid dependence

  • Outline the forthcoming changes to scheduling of Codeine Analgesics and how these changes will impact general practice and pharmacy
  • Identify management of patients misuising codeine, including those suffering from chronic pain
  • Identify alternative prescribing options
  • Identify treatment options for management of opioid dependence

New approach to Dizziness

  • Recognising a posterior circulation stroke in a dizziness presentation

Challenges in diagnosing a Pulmonary Embolism

  • Identifying red flags of a pulmonary embolism patient

Assessment of the sick child

  • Identifying risk for rapid deteriorating in a child

Headache diagnosis you do not want to miss

  • risk stratifying headache presentations

No cost for GPs, PNs and health professionals practising within the SNPHN
