Full Day LGBTQ Inclusive Practice: Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Focus

Sydney North Health Network invites General Practitioners, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, Pharmacists, Mental Health Drug and Alcohol services, NSLHD services and interested SNHN Commissioned services to a webinar providing participants with the skills and confidence to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) patients with or facing mental health issues, alcohol and/or other drugs (AOD) use or concerns.

Participants will learn to deliver a more inclusive, informed and appropriate care.

Many organisations today are reassessing their training and operations to align with changing attitudes, policies and legislation regarding the LGBTQ communities. Facilitated by a qualified ACON trainer, this webinar will help you advance your understanding of LGBTQ culture and unique health aspects with a focus on inclusive practices for health and wellbeing professionals through discussion with like-minded people, compelling video content from the community, and learning activities.

This webinar will assist participants to:

  • Understand the LGBTQ acronym
  • Expand your understanding on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics
  • Reflect upon the unique health and wellbeing issues faced by LGBTQ people, particularly those related to AOD and mental health.

Topics include:

  • The LGBTQ communities
  • What is the difference between sex characteristics, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation?
  • Understanding the lived experience of LGBTQ people
  • Legislation
  • Understanding the health impacts of social stigma and assumptions
  • Mental health/AOD prevalence, patterns and co-morbidities among LGBTQ people
  • Minority stress and trauma impacts on mental health
  • Accessing support and safety planning
  • The context of use for LGBTQ communities
  • Acceptance versus inclusion
  • Implementing inclusive practice in day-to-day interactions
  • Useful tips to increase inclusive service provision
  • Experiential activities, scenarios and case studies

 

There will be an online pre-requisite to be completed that will take approx. 1 hour. Registered learners will be enrolled to the eLearning on 15th February 2022. SPEAKERS:

Hannah Maher (she/her)
Hannah grew up in Regional NSW and moved to Sydney with her girlfriend in 2020. She loves her job as a Pride Trainer as she is constantly learning new things about the LGBTQ community. She also has a keen interest in politics and public policy, particularly social and health policy affecting the LGBTQ community, and particularly the trans/gender diverse community. Currently, she is completing a Master of Public Policy and Governance at UNSW and completed a Bachelors in Performing Arts and worked as an actor for 8 years. She also volunteers as a policy writer for a minor political party. Hannah always tries to make her training fun and engaging, while creating a safe space to ask any questions. She loves to get a good conversation going! As a member of the trans community, she understands how difficult it can be to get good information about trans and gender diverse people and is driven to combat misinformation about the community. She is a self-described video game geek, and often spends her time playing games and streaming online. She also absolutely adore animals, so feel free to share your pets on Zoom!

Joe Lonn (he/him)
Joe relocated to Sydney in 2017 from New York City but spent most his life in Denver, Colorado. Joe brings world-class training knowledge gained during the provision of training sessions throughout his career across a diverse set of industries including hospitality, aged care, consumer goods, health and academia. He specialises in developing through co-design, implementing, and facilitating professional development and training programs utilising advanced learning solutions, tools, and technologies. Joe holds a Master’s in Business Operations from Regis University and a Bachelor of Science from Johnson & Wales University. He volunteers for the Community Visitors Scheme and is very active in both the LGBTQ community and professional training and development industry.

  • Differentiate between gender and sexuality
  • Summarise the mental health and alcohol and or other drug disparities faced by sexuality and gender diverse people
  • Review important events from LGBTQ history and the current legislation related to these priority populations
  • Understand the context of alcohol and or other drug use within the sexuality and gender diverse communities.
  • Detect areas for improvement within their role and workplace
  • Develop strategies and implement actions to increase access and satisfaction of service for patients with diverse sexuality and gender
