Dual Diagnosis: Mental Health and Intellectual Disability

Sydney North Health Network (SNHN) invites local GPs, Nurses, Pharmacists, Allied Health Professionals and their staff to learn about how to effectively diagnose a mental illness in persons with a comorbid intellectual disability. Mission Australia will also provide information about their services available to people with mental illness.

DR ROWAN KEIGHRAN | NEUROPSYCHIATRIST AND PSYCHIATRIST

Dr Keighran is a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist and Psychiatrist with special interest in intellectual disability, autism, adult ADHD, epilepsy, and dementia. He also works with patients with general mental health concerns, including bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety. He has private rooms at the Tilley Lane Clinic in Frenchs Forest, also working in public as a Staff Specialist in Neuropsychiatry for Hunter New England. He has previously worked at the Neuropsychiatric Institute, Prince of Wales Hospital and the Black Dog Institute.

  • Recognise the clinical support needs for people with an intellectual disability and mental illness
  •  Identify the barriers to establishing a diagnosis of mental illness in people with a co-existing intellectual disability.
  • Outline practical strategies to inform diagnosis and assessment for people with an intellectual disability.
  • Assess and refer people with comorbid intellectual disability and mental illness to local services to assist with treatment needs
  • Identify relevant local service providers and referral pathways in the northern Sydney region.
COST:
No cost for GPs, Nurses, Pharmacists, Allied Health Professionals and their staff practising within the SNHN region.
