Family Health Services

Name:Child and Family Health Centre (Early Childhood Health Centre)
Website:http://www.nslhd.health.nsw.gov.au/Hospitals/Pages/chc.aspx
Description:

The Child and Family Health Service is a free service available to all NSW families and care givers with children from birth to school age. There are 20 Child and Family Health Centres (Early Childhood Health Centres) located across Northern Sydney Local Health District.

Specialist trained registered nurses with advanced knowledge, skills and experience about child growth and development, parent-child relationships and healthy family environments work in Child and Family Health Centres.

Your local nurses offer regular health, development and wellbeing checks as well as guidance, support, education and information on all aspects of parenthood and child development. This includes issues such as  feeding your baby or child; making sure your baby or child is growing and developing well; learning to be a parent; looking after yourself; as well as support or information on a range of other parenting issues such as children’s sleep, behaviour, nutrition, play, safety, etc.

The local child and family health nursing team are available to listen to any concerns you have about yourself or child. If you or your child requires extra or further specialised help, the local nurses can refer you or your child to other health or community professionals or services so that you can access further assistance.

If you have a newborn baby you will be offered a home visit (Universal Health Home Visit). Service options for all families with children 0-5 years may include centre consultations; telephone consultations; self-appointments; breast feeding drop-in clinics; and/or parenting groups.  Interpreters can be arranged if required.

There are certain times of development that are known as key ages and stages, and visits to your local nurses are scheduled to correspond with these stages. These key visits are outlined in your child’s Personal Health Record (Blue Book). At these visits the nurse will discuss:

  • The health and development of your child
  • Physical and emotional effects on the family
  • Your own health and wellbeing
  • Any concerns you may have

At other times for advice or if you have any concerns about your child’s health, growth, development or behaviour make an appointment with your local Child and Family Health Centre or doctor.

For general enquires such as hours of operation, appointments, group details or support please contact your nearest Child and Family Health Centre – we are here for you.
